Prescription and Over-the-Counter Drug Drop-off Day
Time/Date:Saturday 9/11/2010 9:00:00 AM    Length: 4 Hours
Description: In Northern Michigan, water is our common bond. So it is natural for us to be protective of it. Recently, testing has revealed a matter of growing concern about water quality: the presence of pharmaceutical compounds in rivers, lakes, and groundwater. When expired or unneeded prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs are flushed or disposed of in landfills, they don't just vanish. Their chemical compounds pass through wastewater treatment systems directly entering our waters or they leach into the soil, and eventually back into the water table. Continuous exposure to these chemicals could be dangerous to fish, wildlife, and humans. Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council, along with many partners, is taking a pro-active stand to protect the waters of Northern Michigan with a Prescription and Over-the-Counter Drug Drop-off Day, Saturday, September 11th from 9am - 2pm that Boyne City Road Commission Garage on M-75, Boyne City. Additionally, in the main display area of the nature building visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy refreshments and to learn about misunderstood animals, such as snakes, spiders, bats and wolves. Live animals, on loan from Preuss Pets will be available for viewing. Children can also take a hayride with a naturalist through the park, during which they can play a trivia game. In addition, there will be a campfire going for roasting marshmallows. Children can participate in all of these activities for just $5. Visitors who are just interested in the “misunderstood animals” area are encouraged to attend and enjoy refreshments as well.
